About

How we rank and why this site exists

PicksByTown ranks local service businesses using public review data, tenure, and service signals. No paid placements, no shared contacts, no pay-to-play ranking.

What this site is

PicksByTown is a directory of local service businesses, organized by city and service type. Every page you see was generated from public business listings and reviews, then scored on a consistent set of factors so rankings are comparable across cities.

Our ranking factors

We use measurable, objective data signals instead of opaque review aggregation. Every business on this site gets a quality score computed from the same inputs:

  • Website health , is the site live, HTTPS-enabled, mobile-friendly, and responsive? Dead and broken sites score lower.
  • Industry fit , how clearly the business fits the service category it's listed under, based on the content of the site itself.
  • Online contactability , published email, phone, and contact page presence. Businesses easy to reach score higher.
  • Cross-source confirmation , appearing in multiple independent data sources (web search rankings, OpenStreetMap, state contractor records where available) is a strong legitimacy signal.

We do not use Yelp-style aggregated review counts because they are easy to manipulate and hard to verify. Our signals are all traceable back to public data you can verify yourself.

What we do not do

  • We do not accept payment for placement or ranking.
  • We do not sell your contact information to the businesses listed.
  • We do not forward the same job to multiple competitors and force a race to call first. Every visitor picks the firm they want directly.

How this compares to Yelp, Angi, and HomeAdvisor

Those sites generate revenue by selling leads to contractors. That creates a structural incentive to push visitors toward whoever is paying most, not whoever is best. PicksByTown is supported by advertising and optional business-claim partnerships, so our incentive is to keep rankings accurate, because accurate rankings are what bring visitors back.

How the data is updated

Listings are refreshed daily from public sources: our internal prospecting pipeline, DuckDuckGo search results, and OpenStreetMap business tags. Business owners can claim their listing to update contact information, hours, and service descriptions, but the rank itself is fixed by the data, not the claim.
